DOCTOR'S OFFICE, RATS, NEW FRIGO ETC.

Dead rat in utility closet after beating it to death. The traps were useless. Later a large one appeared and we resorted to poison. Soon the poison stopped vanishing and we have seen no more of the pesky things.

The new refrigerator. The old one went to the Mission office and we finally got one that is adequate size.

Inside the new refrigerator.

The doctors office reception area where we went to have Sue tested for her abdominal pains. It turned out to be amoebas.

Patiently waiting. We ended up seeing the African doctor who was very thorough in his questioning and who prescribed a full raft of tests, blood, urine, and stool, which cost $230.00 along with the visit. The second visit for the results we met the Belgian doctor, who actually was born in the Congo and has lived here all his life. He too was very cordial and friendly and interpreted the test results, saying there were "cysts d'amoebe" in the stool.

This is the doctor's office entrance, hidden away in an obscure corner of a walled compound amidst other offices.

The examination room.

The nurse receptionist drawing blood. We were told to take our own needle or be sure it was a fresh needle. She opened a fresh blister pack to produce the needle.

A barge pulling up to the dock laden with timber, also showing some passengers and what appear to be some structures probably shelters for passengers or workers and some livestock. Photos taken from the top of our building with zoom. Commercial traffic on the river is a shadow of pre-war commerce. Tugs push barges up and down the river from Kinshasa to Kisangani and in between.

Another shot of the barge without the zoom. The Catholic School courtyard lower left, and the edge of the Chinese HuaWei (sp) building to the right.
