LAST DAYS IN KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO

The last few days in Kinshasa we took a few photos outside our apartment building. This is the restroom building by the bus stop and the tire repair business. The bath tub is to detect leaks in the tires I think.

Closeup of the tire business. I wonder where they "borrow" their electricity. They used to tap into the lines across the lawn and string it through a tree but the tree is gone.

Sue has me photograph shoes. The women love showy shoes, a bit like her at home.

Dinner with friends before our departure.

We introduced the Johnsons and Elder Mabaya to Armand Diangienda, founder and Maestro and Director of the Kimganguiste, Kinshasa Orchestra and Chorus at his home which is also the headquarters.

Armand is a gracious host. We had visited him the year before and attended concerts and practices, as well as religious festivities.

Elder Mabaya, Armand Diangienda, and Sister Bybee.

All of us together.

Exiting the home into the garden area and the porch.

Walking through a ceremonial area which doubles as a practice hall. Members of the choir and orchestra are not paid and come with their children, many of whom will begin learning to play instruments which they must share.

Mother and son cellist.

Beginners practicing.

Outside this gentleman was entering his car and I couldn't resist the shot.

In the parking space outside the Kimbanguiste headquarters. Green is their signature color which, I am told, symbolizes peace. Many of you have seen the 60 Minutes report on the orchestra and chorus.
